About the Festival

The Minnesota Cuban Film Festival (MCFF) is an annual celebration of Cuban cinema held in Minneapolis, bringing the rich storytelling traditions of the island nation to audiences across the Twin Cities. Screening a carefully curated selection of Cuban films each spring, the festival offers Minnesotans a rare and meaningful window into the lives, struggles, creativity, and resilience of the Cuban people — as seen through the eyes of their own filmmakers.

Our History

The Minnesota Cuban Film Festival was founded in 2010 by Greg Klave and the Minnesota Cuba Committee, rooted in a belief that Minnesota has had an integral relationship with Cuba for over 100 years. What began as a small community screening series quickly found an enthusiastic audience — with sold-out shows in its very first year. Now in its 17th edition, the festival has grown into one of the most distinctive cultural film events in the region, presented in partnership with MSP Film Society and ICAIC (the Cuban Film Institute).

Over the years, the festival has featured works by renowned Cuban directors including Ernesto Daranas, Fernando Perez, Gloria Rolando, Humberto Solas, Juan Carlos Cremata, Jorge Perugorria, and many others. Each screening is followed by a discussion, and the festival regularly includes live music and special guest performances, connecting film with the broader tapestry of Cuban art and culture.

Our Mission

The intention of the festival is to create bridges of friendship, love, and understanding between the American people and the Cuban people. Through film, we celebrate diverse stories of social change, human struggle, and resilience  — and we invite Minnesotans to discover Cuban culture on its own terms. Our mission continues: bringing Cuban cinema and culture to Minnesota while highlighting the impact of the U.S. blockade. We believe that cinema is a powerful tool for building empathy, sparking conversation, and fostering international solidarity — one film at a time.

Where & When

The festival takes place annually in the spring at the Main Cinema in Minneapolis, MN, with weekly Wednesday evening screenings at 7pm. Tickets are available through MSP Film Society at mspfilm.org.
